Daller: But when you got it, it really was in need of repair. Thats how I got to know Adriana Scalamandr and the Scalamandrs. You can retire. Right. And that was the end of them. And I had to have somebody upstairs, standing on the stairs, and told me when to stop jacking, when the stairs got level, because the stairs were like this. She would say, The lilacs still in the front hall? And Id say, Oh, is that what that smell is? Get out. Here is George's dog, Rusty, in mild intimidation mode. Oh, God, it was gorgeous. Staten Island and the South Shore is the only place where people can still move, be in a country feeling, and build what they want to build, and have a garden and have a lawn and, you know, they can be in the country and still be in the city. The Seguine Mansion, also known as The Seguine-Burke Mansion, is located on Lemon Creek near the southern shore of Staten Island. So I said, Well, Bess, if youre interested in doing it, Im interested in doing it.. Tell us about your time in England.I went there at 19 and returned 12 years later. And I only have so much money being what I am. So he said, Dont worry about it. I lived in one room, for almost five years. Daller: Because you might remember, he was away for so many years. You could see with all the houses over here, its gotten very built up. All rights reserved. And I studied architecture and the history of design and everything, I know all that. He enjoyed hockey, football, and the beach, but most important to him was family and friends. Too bad that there wasnt somebody with a brain. . And then the people that moved out left a bunch of old furniture, and these were the two that they left. George was a graduate of Hanover High School, Class of 1976 and entered the US Navy. I need to get someone in to do a good cleaning on the house, someone to take care of maintaining it. Troy. And I made a lot of money. So I still had to get up every day and go to work. And they said, Oh my god, George, what are you Oh, and who else was that? And they said he had the box, and took it with them. She said shell keep the doors locked and call Linda if anybody wants to get in and take anything out. Daller: No. So Id go over there and, of course, Bess Seguine was always over there. Daller: So not that much time was spent on Staten Island. Then I got shipped to Europe. And, of course, being in the military and traveling with them, the government shipped all my stuff that I bought and picked upshipped it all back to America for me. And everyone became extremely close. And because of that, and especially the interior design thing, I went around, did little jobs, and did things, and because I learned so much by going to that to school there, that when I got back here, I got nice little jobs here and there. And then I was able to get all my stuff out of storage and out of peoples homes where I stored them, and furnished the house and moved and lived in the whole house, took care of it. And thats what they were doing in France to keep from getting it taxed. Q: Yes, absolutely. And, I had a lot of time over there in London and so I decided, Well, hell, Im going to go to school and learn something. So I took interior design. It was there that I was awakened to the oldness of buildings, its gardens and the historical legacy of its art.Did you fulfill your desire?Yes and worked alongside Mario Buatta, known as the Prince of Chintz.What other occupations have you held?I had a long career as a medic in the Air Force. And I invested in a couple of things. I dont need The Death of Cleopatra hanging above my fireplace. Its still there, you can see it. But, thats what I did. But unfortunately, all the stuff up there was cured by urine. And so people saidthey took all the horses and they moved to New Jersey. Burke: Yes, he did that little sofa there. Its down in Tottenville, beautifully done. Daller: Right, we really dont discuss any of that. And Ill see to it that, financially, things work out for the two of us. Daller: You met some interesting people there. Still kept it. I have no idea what it would be like to live in some other place. And my fatherwe were quite wealthy, growing up. Its just a shame. And I gave that, I thinkI dont know if I gave it to Bess. In fact, he was just a few years older than I, and wasnt it last year we were trying to locate him? And the porch, I dont thinkone end of it, you wouldnt dare walk on because the whole thing would have collapsed. So thats where I got most of the stuff thats here in the house today. Daller: But he has albums upstairs, photos. Burke: Well, I wanted a beautiful Victorian look. Burke: Well, the house, actually, from the outside, is aoh, shitthe name of it went right out of my head. Thats what it is. But, Q: Let me ask you some more about the items that you collected when you were. And I always used to say, Wonder who lives there! and so forth and so on. Yes. If you are going to stay, you better do this this and this, whatever the hell it was. Id love that old house. I said, But Bess, I said your houseI dont know about saving it. She was the girl who hired me, and she ran the big Sherwin Williams store. Burke: Well, if she left them there, she had to come back as a ghost and tell me that they were there! In fact, her husband was a big-wig. The beloved husband of Rosanna (Ialuna) Burke, he was the devoted father of Matthew I. Burke, Jason L. Burke, and Georgina P. Burke, all of Hull. Daller: A lot of the paintings came from Europe, though. Theyd come out and Id say, Look, I can get you this. It turned my stomach just to watch all of that gorgeous stuff just destroyed. I cant remember her name. But thats part of whats been going on down here. And then finally she sold the house and she bought a beautiful place in Greenwich Village and moved to Greenwich Village. Youre working too hard. Thats annoying certain people. What was it, in the city? Because you never finish, youre always finding something to do. But, God, that was almost 100 years ago, you know? He was temporary administrator of St. Mary's, Staten Island, 2010-2012. He was appointed judicial vicar of the Interdiocesan Appellate Tribunal for the Province of New York in 2009. I bet. And he dealed in antique rugs, and regular rugs and everything. And whats going on up the street here now? Q: Was that here in the house? And I dream that I heard some noise. Are you still interested? And I said, Well, of course I am. Daller: Well, he hopes that Historic House Trust and the Parks Department work hand in hand and maintaining itthat theyll maintain it as a museum. Valley Stream. And if you went around with Mario Buatta, that was like going with the President of the United States. Hes done it for forty-plus years, now its time to give back. Burke: Well, a good example is the one right here at the end of the street. He introduced me all the time tobecause look at look at what he was. And you can put it together and fix it. You come out and take over the boys and mens department in the store. I said, Thats fine. And the fact that somebody could save a house like this, and want to show it to people, and let people hear about the history behind it? But before we know it, there wont be a thing left in the house. And then Id been in Europe all that time. And it was one of those busy, busy, goddamn nights. And I took the money. I went over there, and it was standing up sleeping! What the hell do you think it was? Was very little time on here. Home; About Us. So I said to her, I said Bess, the only thing Ill save your house is a bulldozer! So a lot of the things that you acquired to furnish the house were in poor condition, and then you have them reupholstered and restored. And shell be caretaker. Burke: And Im leaving everything thats in the houseits staying. And it did all the dental workany kind of dental work and everything was manufactured there. And all the time when all the lilacs would come in the spring, and the whole place would smell of lilacs, its gorgeous, still is. Adriana would come out and shed say, Well, Ill tell you what, George. And then I shipped it all back home. In good condition? Burke: Yes. Burke: Of course, Id been in Alaska for all that time. So Id go up there and Id say, Ed, Adriana, what do you got? Well, we got some old fabric, out of date fabric. Give it to me! And Id take it. I donated the house to Historic House Trust retaining life rights while I continued every effort to preserve it. Good God! So you really cant even try to say what does it feel like? Things like that? Burke: Yes. I had the best collection of the most beautiful carved ivory and things because they didnt have money but they would give you things. Burke: Yes, I had to go down in the basement, and put a post, and then I had to jack up the stairs. Or you can do a small whatever. So it didnt matter. And the only problem with that was the kitchen was downstairs. That woman, she lived in riding clothes! That was a great house. Its Meissen. And I was so damn busy, I never got to go home. But thats what that was. George Burke. Because my house was right across the street from it. Burke: Down in the basement, my friend Eriche was great, with this Ouija board and all this stuffand he said, George, lets do a seance! So we got a bunch of people together and we went all down in the basement. And I walked into there and I walked up, and the lid was closed on the coffin. I frequently told her how much I really longed to own the house. And that went for years. You know, he just passed away. Burke: Oh, God, I stood on the edge here and I watched what was going on over there. They were the Mackeys.
